Kate Pattison competes in the UK School GamesKate Pattison has recently competed in the UK School Games in the Olympic Stadium for discus. The 2012 School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK's elite young athletes of school age. She competed against people from Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the U17 age category (years 10 and 11). She finished 4th with a personal best of 36.29, with the throws being the best of her life. It was an amazing experience for Katie, meeting people from different sports and living the life of an athlete in the athletes lounge. Y11 have a memorable day!Friday 11th May was the last day at school for our Y11 students, before they start their official study leave. To mark this memorable occasion, many decided to dress up in a variety of costumes before starting a packed day of activities. Mr Dobson Head of Upper School, arranged a special presentation event to start the day, with a large Y11 picture cake and drinks for everyone. Pupils were then directed towards buses for a fun day at a local paintballing activity centre. At the end of the day, pupils met in the Old Hall and were presented with a Yearbook, which was designed and prepared by the pupils themselves. We wish Year 11 all the best in the up and coming exams. Lord Hill of Oareford CBE, visits CGSLord Hill of Oareford, CBE, who is the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Education, has visited Caistor Grammar School. He had a tour of the School, met Governors and staff and spoke at a special assembly to students of the School. He described Caistor Grammar School as "one of the best schools in the country" and praised students for their outstanding results. He also noted that the School had been one of the first in the country to take on the extra responsibility of being an Academy. He said at the end of his visit that he was very impressed by all that he had seen and wished the School well as well as inviting students to visit him at the House of Lords. Headmaster, Mr Roger Hale, said "We are all delighted to welcome Lord Hill on this visit and it is a real sign of our success as a school that a Government Minister has taken the trouble to come and see us. I am sure Lord Hill's account of his career has inspired some of our students to want to enter the world of politics. It is a proud day for Caistor Grammar School." Young Peoples' Maths ConferenceThe first ever Young Peoples' Maths Conference was held at Caistor Grammar School on Saturday 21st April. This was organised by Caistor student Jack Robinson and was a great success. Dr Vicki Neale of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge University came to support students who brought problems that ranged from 'Collatz sequences' , to how functions can be defined from the minimum of information and yet create results that yield Fibonacci patterns, to defining the motion of a water droplet in a computer program. Talent ShowOn Tuesday 27th March a large number of sixth form and lower school students transformed the Gym into a venue for exciting music and performance. The school's first Arts Award Showcase and Talent Show, which raised funds for the Aegis Trust, allowed parents and fellow students alike to see the hard work that goes into Arts Award at CGS. The first half saw a showcase of talented students from the Arts Award groups, such as Benedict Harris playing the accordian and an exciting dance to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious by the year seven singers, ably led by sixth former Eleanor Thompson. The second half of the show saw students battling head to head to win 1st place. The results, decided by tough judges Mr Katakalidis, Miss Ryley and Mrs Robson, were as follows: 1st 'Daft Bodies' with an innovative dance routine, 2nd Emily Hood and Thomas Watson with a beautiful duet and 3rd Maisy Steer who wowed the audience with an impressive rap performance. All in all, a brilliant evening, many thanks to all involved! Visit of Les Walton, OBE, Chair of the YPLAWe were delighted to welcome Les Walton, OBE, Chair of the YPLA, to School recently. The YPLA provides funding for all academies and all post 16 education. He therefore controls more money than the Navy. We discussed many items with him and he was very pleased to meet the Chair of Governors, Mrs Lindsay Fell, and Vice-Chair of Governors, Mr John Colley, as well as discussing student matters with our outgoing Senior Prefect Team. NHS School's Competition SuccessCongratulations to Eleanor Mc Cormick, Lolita Walker and Natassja Ohonowskyj, all in 9Z, who were awarded 'Highly Commended' certificates for their entries to the NHS Schools' Competition. This is a national competition which had entries from over 1200 students. The students had to write a CV or job description for an NHS job and produce advertising material for their chosen career - the role of a psychologist in the NHS. Well done to all of them! Amanda's BistroTwenty guests enjoyed a three course meal, prepared by 10 student chefs on Wednesday evening. Mrs Amanda Gould, the school's Catering Manager, prepared a top class menu which included sea bass, pork fillet and beef olive as some of the options for the main course. The final dessert was presented by the student chefs to their parents and family members to a round of applause. Well done to all the staff and students involved, it was a great evening using our state-of-the-art cooking facilities. |
